eBay Listing Photo Guide
eBay Image Requirements
eBay allows up to 24 images per listing at no extra cost. Minimum resolution is 500x500 pixels, but eBay recommends 1600x1600 for the zoom feature. Listings without zoom-enabled images rank lower in search. Formats: JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, or GIF. JPEG is standard. Maximum 12MB per image. eBay requires that the main image has a white or light gray background for Buy It Now and catalog listings. Auction listings have more flexibility but white backgrounds still perform better in search results. No borders, text overlays, watermarks, or marketing graphics on images. eBay may suppress listings with non-compliant images. eBay adds its own frame and badges; you don't need to add your own.
1600x1600 minimum
This enables the zoom feature. Listings without zoom rank lower and convert worse.
White or light background
Required for Buy It Now listings. Strongly recommended for auctions.
No overlays
No text, watermarks, borders, or promotional graphics on your images.
Use all 24 slots
More photos = more trust = more sales. eBay provides 24 free image slots per listing.
What to Photograph for Every Listing
Every eBay listing should include: front view, back view, all sides, top/bottom if relevant, close-ups of details, labels/model numbers, any accessories or included items, and any flaws or damage. The first photo is the thumbnail in search results. It should be the cleanest, most appealing view of the item on a white background. This image alone determines whether buyers click. Labels and serial numbers build authenticity for branded items. Photograph brand tags, model numbers, serial numbers, and manufacturing labels. This helps buyers verify authenticity and reduces returns. Include everything that ships. If the listing includes accessories, manuals, or original packaging, photograph all of it together and individually.
All angles
Front, back, left, right, top, bottom. Leave no angle unseen.
Labels and identifiers
Brand tags, model numbers, serial numbers, size labels. Proves authenticity.
Everything included
Group shot of all items included in the listing plus individual shots of each.
Scale reference
Include a ruler, coin, or hand for items where size might be unclear.
Documenting Condition
Honest condition documentation is the best way to reduce returns, negative feedback, and disputes. Photograph every flaw, no matter how minor. Scratches, dents, stains, wear marks, missing pieces, and functional issues should all be photographed clearly. Use close-up shots with good lighting to show the exact nature and severity of each flaw. Include condition notes in your description referencing the specific photo number: 'See photo 7 for the small scratch on the left side.' This sets accurate expectations. For electronics, photograph the screen turned on to show it functions. For clothing, photograph under even light to show true color and any pilling, fading, or wear. Over-documenting condition builds trust. Buyers who see every flaw upfront are less likely to return items or leave negative feedback than buyers who discover undisclosed flaws.
Photograph every flaw
Close-up shots of scratches, dents, stains, and wear. Good lighting, sharp focus.
Reference in description
'See photo 7 for small scratch' sets expectations and reduces disputes.
Show functionality
Electronics: screen on. Appliances: working. Toys: all parts present.
Tips by Product Category
Electronics: photograph every port, button, and connector. Show the screen lit up. Include the model number label. Show any included cables, chargers, and accessories. Clothing: photograph flat lay (front and back), label with size and brand, close-up of fabric texture, any flaws. For higher-end items, photograph on a hanger against a white background. Collectibles: photograph condition carefully from multiple angles. Include close-ups of any grading-relevant features. Show the item in and out of packaging if applicable. Auto parts: photograph the part number clearly. Show fitment details. Include packaging if OEM. Photograph any wear or damage that affects functionality. Vintage/antique: photograph maker's marks, signatures, stamps, and date indicators. Document patina and age-related character. Close-ups of craftsmanship details build value perception.
Match category expectations
Electronics buyers want ports and screens. Clothing buyers want fabric and labels. Adapt your shots.
Highlight unique features
What makes this item special? Limited edition marks, unusual features, premium materials.
Include model/part numbers
Clear photos of identifying numbers help buyers verify compatibility and authenticity.
Stock Photos vs Your Own Photos
eBay allows stock photos (manufacturer images) for new, sealed items in specific categories. However, your own photos almost always perform better. Stock photos tell the buyer nothing about the specific item they'll receive. Your photos show the actual item, its condition, and what's included. For used items, stock photos are misleading and against eBay policy. Always use your own photos that accurately represent the item's current condition. The exception: new, factory-sealed items where the stock photo shows exactly what the buyer receives. Even then, adding your own photo of the actual sealed package builds additional trust.
Always use your own photos
For used, open-box, or refurbished items, stock photos misrepresent condition.
Stock photos only for sealed-new
Acceptable only for new, factory-sealed items. Still better to add your own.
Combine both for new items
Lead with your photo of the actual box/item, add stock photos for feature details.
Editing Photos for eBay
The most common eBay photo edits: white background creation, shadow removal, brightness correction, and cropping to square. For white backgrounds: 'Remove the background and make it pure white.' For brightness: 'Brighten the photo so the item is clearly visible.' For multiple items: 'Remove the background from this group of items and place on white.' Color accuracy is important to reduce returns. 'Make the colors accurate and true to life' ensures buyers see the real color of the item.
Create white background
'Remove the background and make it white' for clean, professional listing photos.
Brighten and correct color
'Brighten the photo and make the colors accurate' ensures the item is clearly visible.
Crop to square
'Crop to 1:1 square with the item centered' for consistent listing thumbnails.
